The History of the Grand National

The Grand National is a famous horse race held annually at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, England. The race has a long and storied history dating back to 1839, when it was first run as the “Grand Liverpool Steeplechase.” Our Grand National Runners 2024 resource has been put together as a free guide for our readers to learn from.

The first Grand National was won by a horse named Lottery, ridden by jockey Jem Mason. The race was run over a distance of 4 miles and 3 furlongs, with 30 fences to be jumped along the way. Over the years, the race has undergone many changes and modifications, but it has always remained one of the most challenging and prestigious steeplechases in the world.

One of the most famous and successful horses in the history of the Grand National is Red Rum, who won the race three times (in 1973, 1974, and 1977) and finished second twice. Red Rum became a national icon in the UK and is widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time.

In recent years, the Grand National has faced some controversy over concerns about the safety of the race, with some calling for changes to the course and the number of fences. Despite these concerns, the race remains an important part of British sporting culture and attracts huge crowds of spectators each year.
