A Brief History of Liverpool Football Club
Liverpool Football Club is one of the most successful clubs of all time, with plenty of European titles. The club was founded in 1892, and has an extraordinarily rich and compelling history. The club has gone through a number of changes and experienced good times and bad times over the years, which has contributed to the club’s status as one of the most followed football clubs in the world. Liverpool FC has a huge fan base around the world, and also has over 200 official supporter football clubs in 50 different countries.
Everton Football Club was the first official team to play in the Anfield stadium as a home ground. Anfield is now known as the home ground of Liverpool FC. In 1892, a dispute arose between Everton FC directors and Anfield Stadium owner John Houlding over the rent of the stadium. Due to this disagreement, Everton FC left the Anfield stadium and shifted to Goodison Park, leaving John Houlding with an empty stadium with no team to play on it.
Instead of renting out the stadium, Holding decided to build his own football club. When he formed the club, he originally wanted to name it Everton Athletic, but the English Football Association did not allow him to choose the name, which is why he named it Liverpool FC. Houlding applied for the membership of the first Division football league, but his application was rejected.
Liverpool FC joined the Lancashire league in 1892. Their first season at Lancashire league was a success, they won the league on goal average. In the same year, they also won the Liverpool District Cup by defeating Everton FC in the same season. After winning the Lancashire league, Liverpool reapplied for the English Football league and got entrance in the second division, and then later promoted for the First Division.
Early success of Liverpool
After the promotion to the First Division of English Football league in 1896, Liverpool won the first league title in 1901, and just 5 years later, they won their second league title in 1906. Although the league was not as competitive as it is now, this early success helped Liverpool to establish themselves as one of the top football clubs in English football. Liverpool won two consecutive league titles in 1922 and 1923. After two consecutive wins, the club gained immense popularity. The club’s fan base grew rapidly and more football fans began to support Liverpool.
The Bill Shankly era
Liverpool won the First Division Football League for the fifth time after 23 years in 1946-47. Later on, the club suffered due to inconsistent performance in the post WWII era. The 1953-54 was the worst season for Liverpool FC, the club was relegated to the second division. In the 1958-59 FA Cup, Liverpool lost against Worcester City, which was a non-league club. It was the toughest period of the club, to bring Liverpool FC back into the game, ex-Scottish right-half Bill Shankly was hired as manager in 1959.
Shankly brought some new life to the club by making some difficult decisions. According to Shankly, the Liverpool squad he inherited consisted mostly of average players, so he decided to release 24 players from the squad. To build a team that could perform consistently throughout the season, he hired some of the best players in the league. Shankly’s management skills were exceptional, his method of selecting players, training and engaging fans was unique, revolutionary, and highly successful.
Shankly’s unconventional management techniques paid off quickly. Liverpool won the second division football league in 1961-62, and successfully returned to the first division in the next season. Under his command, Liverpool won one Second Division Football League (1961–62), three First Division League (1963–64, 1965–66, and 1972–73), two FA Cup titles in (1964–65, and 1973–74), three FA Charity Shields (1964, 1965, and 1966), and one UEFA Cup (1972-73). Bill Shankly retired as a manager at the age of 60.
The Paisley Era
Bob Paisley worked as an assistant at Liverpool FC under Bill Shanky’s management, and after Shanky’s retirement, he was appointed as head coach of Liverpool FC. It was a difficult challenge for him to carry on the legacy of the club’s greatest manager, Bill Shanky, but he exceeded all expectations. Under Paisley management, Liverpool was a team that was extraordinarily consistent. During the Paisley era, Liverpool remained one of the most dominant clubs in English football.
As a manager, Paisley led Liverpool to win 20 major honors in just 10 years. He is still the most successful manager in the history of Liverpool. Under his management, Liverpool won six First Division Football league titles (1975–76, 1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1981–82, and 1982–83), three League Cup (1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83), six FA Charity Shields (1974, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1982), three European Cup titles (1976–77, 1977–78, and 1980–81), one UEFA Cup (1975–76), and one UEFA Super Cup (1977).
After winning the Football league in 1983, Paisley announced his retirement as manager. He served almost 44 years at Liverpool in different positions, and became one of the most successful club managers in the history of English football. He also served as club director for seven years. After Paisley, Joe Fagan was hired as new manager of the club, he helped Liverpool to win European Cup, League Cup, and First Division League title in one season 1983-84.
Kenny Dalglish Era
After Fagan’s retirement, Kenny Dalglish, also known as King Kenny, became the manager of the Liverpool FC. He was the first person in the history of English football to be a player and manager of the club at the same time. This not only makes him unique, but also shows his great talents and abilities as a football player. Dalglish worked as a manager from 1985 to 1991 for Liverpool FC, and he was again hired for a season in 2011.
The Scottish striker also became one of the greatest strikers of Liverpool by scoring 172 goals in 515 games. As a manager, he won 11 trophies for the club, including three First Division (1985–86, 1987–88, and 1989–90), two FA Cup (1985–86, 1988–89), one Football League Cup (2011–12), one Football League Super Cup (1985–86), and four FA Charity Shield (1986, 1988, 1989, 1990).
The Heysel and Hillsborough Disasters
When we talk about Liverpool FC, we can’t forget the two biggest tragedies in the history of English football. There were two terrible catastrophes during the Kenny Dalglish era. In 1985, Liverpool played in the European Cup final against Juventus in Belgium. During the match, Liverpool supporters started throwing stones at Juventus supporters. Juventus fans ran backwards and thousands were pushed against the wall, killing 39 Juventus fans. More than 600 people were injured in the disaster. In consequence, all English football clubs were banned from participating in any European competition for next 5 years, and Liverpool FC was banned for 6 years.
Following the ban on European competitions, English clubs focused on domestic competitions. Under the management of Dalglish, Liverpool continued their enthusiasm and won two more league titles in 1986 and 1988. In 1989, Liverpool played in the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, during which the club suffered another tragedy. Poor security and crowded stadiums caused chaos and many people were pushed towards the security fence, resulting in several deaths. 97 football fans died and over 750 were injured because of the tragedy. Heysel and Hillsborough incidents are certainly two worst stadium disasters in the history of English football.
Liverpool FC in Premier League
After rebranding in 1992, the English Premier League became the official name for First-Division Football League. Liverpool’s EPL record of EPL is not very dominating. Although the club maintained its position as one of the top football clubs in English football, it did not win the league title until 2019-20.
