Bamford seals stirring comeback win as Leeds cut Leicester’s lead to six points

Not so long ago Leeds were a receding speck in Leicester’s rear-view mirror but, suddenly, Daniel Farke’s second-placed team are tailgating the Championship leaders.

A once seemingly unassailable gap has been cut to six points. That is far too close for comfort for Enzo Maresca and his players who will doubtless have headed back down the M1 cursing their inability to see out a game they dominated until the substitute full-back Connor Roberts equalised for Leeds in the 80th minute.

Championship roundup: leaders Leicester rocked by Middlesbrough

  • Boro end four-game winless run at King Power Stadium
  • Leeds keep up pressure with ‘mature’ victory at Plymouth

Middlesbrough claimed their first win at the King Power Stadium with a 2-1 victory over Championship leaders Leicester. After the hosts missed two big chances to take the lead, Finn Azaz opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a clever finish from Lewis O’Brien’s square pass before Samuel Silvera’s emphatic strike after 37 minutes extended Boro’s advantage.

Jamie Vardy halved the deficit in the 85th minute, but Middlesbrough held on to end a four-game winless run and complete the double over Leicester. The Foxes, who lost at home for the first time since November, are now nine points in front of second-placed Leeds – their opponents on Friday.

FA Cup roundup: Leeds beat Plymouth, Coventry set up Maidstone tie

  • Coventry host non-leaguers after win over Sheffield Wednesday
  • Leeds earn extra-time victory; Southampton will face Liverpool

Three extra-time goals fired Leeds into the FA Cup fifth round with a 4-1 win at Championship rivals Plymouth. The substitutes Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter combined to put the visitors 3-1 up before a 117th-minute own goal by Argyle striker Ryan Hardie capped a comprehensive Leeds win. They will now travel to Aston Villa or Chelsea on 28 February.

Leeds hit the woodwork twice in the opening 20 minutes of a hard-fought first half but the tie was goalless at the break. However their pressure eventually told in the second half as Wilfried Gnonto fired the visitors ahead in the 66th minute with a measured right-foot strike from the edge of the box which beat Conor Hazard. Gnonto benefited from a superb pass from Glen Kamara from the right.

Plymouth Argyle 1-4 Leeds United (aet): FA Cup fourth round replay – as it happened

Leeds ran out convincing winners in the end, after being taken to extra time by their battling hosts

3 min: Piroe pings a ball down the centre to release Anthony on goal. The flag immediately goes up for offside. Not sure about that at all; Sorinola may have been playing him on. Plymouth get away with one there.

2 min: Wright probes down the inside-left channel and floats a cross towards Hardie on the right-hand corner of the six-yard box. Hardie’s not far away from getting a toe to the ball, but the wind takes it out for a goal kick.
