Tottenham is best known for their eight FA Cup victories, but despite the fact that their most recent trophy was the League Cup, which they won in 2009, the club is still considered one of England’s top clubs. Tottenham was the first English club to win the UEFA Cup (now known as Europa League) in 1963. Spurs has long been known for its fast-paced, aggressive style of play.

Brief History of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club

Tottenham Hotspur FC was originally formed in 1882, by a group of schoolboys from All Hallows Church. Bobby Buckle, a student, led the group in forming a football club. These students were also part of Hotspur Cricket Club and they formed a football club to play during the winter season. John Ripsher, a teacher at All Hallows Church, also assisted boys in the formation of the Hotspur football club, serving as the first president of the club.

Ripsher not only supported youngsters in forming the club but also arranged suitable ground for them. In 1884, the name was changed to Tottenham Hotspur FC to avoid confusion with another football team in London called Hotspur FC. In October 1885, the club played their first professional match in the London Association Cup, a cup competition, they defeated St Albans 5-2 in the match. The first victory drew the attention of the local community. Check out the latest Tottenham transfer news 24/7 with our dedicated news section.

In December 1896, Tottenham Hotspur was elected to the Southern League Division One. It took them only a few years to win their first Southern League championship, which they did in 1899-1900. Tottenham’s title success aided the club in gaining a large fan base in the country. Tottenham became a limited company in March 1898.

First FA Cup Title

Spurs first major football title was FA Cup 1900-01. It was the 30 FA Cup season, and Tottenham was the only non-league side to win the FA Cup. The club played outstandingly throughout the Cup championship. In the first round, Spurs defeated Preston North End 4-2 in a replay match. In the second round, the club defeated a Manchester-based club Bury 2-1.

Spurs continued their good record by winning their third-round match against Reading. It was a comfortable victory for the Spurs. They grew in confidence and advanced to the Semifinals. Spurs met West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup Semi-Final, which Spurs won 4-0, qualifying them for the final. Tottenham played Sheffield United in the final, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

A week later, the FA Cup final was replayed. Despite having a one-goal lead in the first half, Sheffield United lost the match by 3-1. Spurs won the FA Cup for the first time, making them the only non-league team to do it in the history of the Football League.

Promotion to the Football League

Tottenham Hotspurs was elected into the Football League Second Division for the first time in 1908. In their first season, Spurs finished second in the league. Being runner-up in the league, Tottenham earned promotion to the First Division of the Football League. The club failed to put up a significant performance in the league, finishing mostly in the middle of the standings. In 1912, Peter McWilliam was appointed as manager, but he was unable to improve the club’s performance. Why not read more about past Premier League winners with our free guide?

Tottenham was relegated to the Second Division after finishing last in the league in 1914-15. Due to the First World War, the football league was suspended in the same year. Tottenham played in the Second Division when the football league resumed after World War I in 1919, and won the Second Division the following season to return to the First Division.

In 1921, McWilliam assisted Tottenham in improving their playing style and led the team to their second FA Cup triumph, defeating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in the final. Tottenham finished second to Liverpool in the Football League the following season, missing out on the title by just six points. In the following seasons, the team finished in the middle of the table before being relegated to the Second Division in 1928.

First League Title for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur took 68 years to win the top-tier football League in England. The club remained in the Second Division for the majority of the 1930s and 1940s seasons and failed to win any major trophies. After WWII, the team appointed Arthur Rowe, a former Spurs player, as their new manager in 1949. He led the team to a new style of play known as “Push and Run.”

The club’s new style of play became very effective in the league. Spurs were promoted to the First Division after winning the Second Division in 1949-1950. Spurs also benefited from the “Push and Run” style of play in Top Tier football. In 1950-51, the team had an exceptional season and won the league title for the first time. As other teams began to emulate the “Push and Run” style of play, the Spurs’ tactic became less effective.

First European title

After winning the FA Cup in 1962, Tottenham qualified for the European Cup Winners Cup. Spurs were consistent throughout the competition, defeating some of Europe’s finest clubs. Tottenham qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Rangers 8-4 on aggregate in the first round. Spurs faced Slovan Bratislava in the quarterfinals and won 6-2 on aggregate. Spurs qualified for the European Cup Winners’ Cup final after defeating OFK Beograd 5-2 on aggregate in the Semifinal.

Tottenham Hotspur competed in the final against Atlético Madrid, a Spanish giant. Tottenham won 5–1 thanks to goals from Terry Dyson, Jimmy Greaves, and John White. Tottenham made history by being the first British club to win a major European trophy. Jimmy Greaves scored the most goals in the competition, with 37. Tottenham came close to winning their second European trophy in 2019 as they qualified for the UEFA Champions League final, but they were defeated 2-0 by Liverpool.

Bill Nicholson Era and more success

Bill Nicholson, a former English footballer, was named the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur in 1958. When Nicholson took over as manager, the club was in 14th place in the league standings, and in Nicholson’s debut game in charge, Tottenham defeated Everton 10-4, setting a new club record. Nicholson’s era is considered as the greatest period in Tottenham’s history. Spurs won one League title (1960-61) and one Cup Winners’ Cup (1963), three FA Cups (1961, 1962, 1967), two League Cups (1971, 1973), and one UEFA Cup (1972) during Nicholson’s sixteen years at the club.

After a terrible start in 1974, Nicholson stepped down as manager of the club. His departure had an obvious impact on the club’s performance, and after two poor seasons, the club was relegated to the Second Division in 1977. Keith Burkinshaw was hired as manager to save the team. Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa were among the prominent stars he signed. Burkinshaw was instrumental in Spurs’ comeback to the Premier League, winning two FA Cups in a row in 1981 and 1982, as well as a UEFA Cup in 1984.

The Premier League Era of Spurs

Tottenham was one of the founding members of the Premier League. Spurs were one of the five clubs that were instrumental in establishing the Premier League as England’s top-tier league. Despite being a founding member of the Premier League, Spurs have never won a title and have spent most of their league seasons in the middle of the table. Tottenham was regarded as an ordinary Premier League squad until 2010.

In 2014, the club hired Mauricio Pochettino as head coach, he rebuilt the squad and changed the way they played. Pochettino’s aggressive style of play helped Tottenham achieve third place in the Premier League in 2015-16. The following season’s league result would be even better; Spurs finished second in the 2016-17 season, their highest league finish since winning the title in 1962-63. The club’s only title in the last two decades was the League Cup in 2007-08.
